An interesting project for a farmer who had a group of barns to convert to residential use. The brief was to create four residential units of which one would be retained for the clients’ own use.
The challenge with projects involving a group of barns like this is to create a feeling of individuality as well as establishing an element of privacy through the careful configuration of the access and approaches. It involves thoughtfully considering the layout of the gardens and surrounding courtyards too as part of the scheme.
The project shown here is for one of the units where we created bedrooms at ground floor and living accommodation above so that the bedrooms could open out onto private courtyards and terraces outside. This also enabled the long views of open countryside to be enjoyed during the day from the first floor where a dramatic open plan kitchen–living–dining–study space extends the whole length of the barn.
